What If You Can't Afford A Podcast Studio, Or Your Guests Are In Bermuda?

In the ever-evolving world of podcasting, it's all about staying ahead of the curve. As podcasters, we're always on the lookout for ways to spice up our content, reach more ears, and retain our listeners.  Remote recording is becoming super popular, especially with platforms like Riverside. You can get the best recording quality right from your front room! By using the right platform and following the right steps, we can show how awesome podcast production can be, no matter where you are.

But Here's the Deal

Ensuring precision during recording is key. While post-production techniques can indeed work wonders (they're a real lifesaver!), addressing certain issues afterward can prove to be quite challenging. Take a misplaced microphone or too much room echo, for instance. It's wise to avoid such issues altogether to maintain optimal audio quality.

Let's take a look into why remote recordings have become the new norm.Flexibility: Say goodbye to borders! With remote podcast recording, geography won’t limit you anymore. Whether your guests are in Timbuktu or Tokyo, they can join in without moving a muscle. Sure, you'll have to juggle time zones, but that's a small price to pay for worldwide reach.Convenience: Picture this: You, chilling in your comfiest chair, recording your podcast. No need to brave rush hour traffic. Remote recording lets you do your thing from home sweet home (just remember to dress for the camera!). Improved Audio Quality: Who says studio-quality sound is out of reach? With platforms like Riverside, it's a dream. Having high quality recording capabilities ensures your audience receives clear audio. Need separate audio tracks for each participant? No problem, it's done swiftly.Backup and Reliability: Tech issues got you down? Fear not! Riverside's got backup systems to keep your recordings safe and sound. No more sweating over lost data or dodgy connections.Enhanced Engagement: Time to take your podcast to the next level! The use of video means you can chat face-to-face with your guests. It's like having a virtual studio right at your fingertips. Easy Integration with Editing Software: Seamless integration with popular editing software streamlines post-production workflows, allowing you to focus on what matters most—creating compelling content.

    - Log into Riverside and create your studio
    - Invite your guests and admit them into the virtual studio.

    2. Set the Scene

    - Find a spot with minimal noise and optimal acoustics, such as a front room or bedroom, not a bathroom or kitchen
    - Ensure no interruptions to make sure it's perfect for quality recordings.

    3. Mic Check, 1-2, 1-2

    - Having an external USB microphone is crucial for remote recordings, as well as a set of headphones.
    - Make sure both are plugged in, and the correct audio input and output devices are selected.
    - Position the microphone correctly, between 3 and 6 inches is perfect. Too close and you’ll hear lots of nasty breaths and plosive sounds. Too far away and you’ll capture a lot more room echo.

    4. Testing

    - Conduct test recordings to ensure the equipment isn’t misbehaving, a short 10 second recording should do the trick!
    - Adjust settings and microphone placement as needed to achieve the perfect sound.

    5. Lights, Camera, Action

    - Prepare the room and guests, minimise background noise and distractions - eye on the prize.
    - Make sure there are no sources of light directly above or behind your guest, ideally a light source in front of them is perfect
    - Hit record  and monitor audio levels throughout the session for the best quality.

    6. Stay Connected

    - Sort out any wonky internet issues before you start.
    - Optimise your bandwidth and cosy up to that router for smooth sailing.
